Treatment for Eye-Related Diseases and Ailments

Dr. Ronald J. Piffl Optometrist can help treat a variety of eye-related diseases and conditions. Below, you’ll find more information regarding the ailments we assist with. Call (715) 536-3250 today to get started.

Cataracts

Cataracts cause cloudiness in your eye which in turn decreases your range of vision. Common causes include aging and excess exposure to ultraviolet light. There is no real way to prevent cataracts, though we do recommend wearing the appropriate eyewear during the summertime. Treatment options include surgery; more than half of all Americans by age 80 will undergo cataract surgery.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eye can’t produce enough tears, or the tears that are produced are too thin to effectively nourish and lubricate your eye. This is common, chronic, and especially found in older adults. If left untreated, you risk potential eye infection.

Some of the causes of dry eye syndrome include improper balancing of tear production and drainage, as well as various diseases and medications. Symptoms include irritated or burning eyes, feeling something in your eyes, excess watering, and blurry vision. Treatment is effective at restoring the normal amount of tears in your eyes, so call our office to discuss your options.

Eye Allergies

Eye allergies are fairly common and include a variety of ailments including:

  • Red, itchy eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sinus pressure
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat
  • And more

Retinal Tears and Detachments

Retinal tears and detachments happen when the inner lining of the eye is damaged. This can happen due to a variety of environmental factors, though is more commonly found in adults over the age of 40. Symptoms include flashes, floaters, blurry vision, and seeing dark spots.

The best ways to treat tears and detachments are either surgery or freezing treatment. Both of these procedures keep your retina from fully detaching.

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy works similarly to other types of therapy, as our eyes are an extension of the brain. Often used to treat children, vision therapy has been found to be effective for adults. It includes a variety of techniques and activities that are based in real science.

Vision therapy can be a treatment option for:

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)
  • Binocular vision problems
  • Eye movement disorders
  • Focusing disorders
  • Visual deficiencies
